Keeping your VanMoof bike's firmware up to date ensures optimal performance and access to the latest features. The firmware update process consists of two main steps and requires a stable Bluetooth connection throughout. The update consist of 2 parts:
Part 1: Download. The firmware file is downloaded to your phone via the VanMoof app over your internet connection.
Part 2: Transfer to Bike. The downloaded firmware file is transferred from your phone to your bike via Bluetooth. This step requires a stable and uninterrupted Bluetooth connection.
Is your bike not updating?
Before you start with troubleshooting below, please make sure your bike is in its original state. Remove any accessories that are connected to your bike (i.e. Front Carrier, or Heavy Duty Rear Carrier with Light), reconnect the front and/or rear light to the original cable, and try to update the bike again.
Troubleshooting
Connection Issues During Update
- Follow Bluetooth troubleshooting steps:
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on your phone
- Close and reopen the VanMoof app
- Power cycle your bike (hold the power button 15 seconds)
- Ensure no other devices are connected to your bike
- Move closer to your bike (within 1 meter)
- Try the update in a location with less Bluetooth interference
- Establish a stable connection before retrying:
- Wait for the confirmation tick sound when connecting
- Verify the connection is stable for at least 30 seconds
- Ensure your phone's screen stays active during the update
Update Failure
What happens:
- One or more components fail to update due to issues
- The app displays a failure message despite partial success
- Your bike will still function normally with the updated components
- Have you adjusted the cables on this bike? Broken or damaged cables will cause the update to interrupt.
Your next steps:
- Check bike functionality - test all features to ensure normal operation and reset the bike by pressing the power button for 15 seconds
- Retry the update after establishing a more stable connection:
- Follow the Bluetooth troubleshooting steps above
- Ensure optimal conditions (close proximity, minimal interference)
- Visit a partner or contact Support if issues persist:
- Note or screenshot the error message
- Report any functionality issues with your bike
- Provide your BikeID and app version
Update Takes Too Long
Normal duration: 5-15 minutes depending on update size and connection quality
If taking longer:
- Don't interrupt - let the process complete
- Keep devices close - maintain proximity throughout
- Keep the app active - don't force close the app
