2G Network Shutdown FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is this happening?

A: Mobile network providers worldwide are phasing out 2G networks as they transition to newer technologies. This is an industry-wide change that's outside of VanMoof's control. VanMoof has worked to find a solution that allows riders to continue using Theft Tracking if they choose to.

Q: Which VanMoof bikes are affected?

A: The S3, X3, and older connected models are affected. You can find your bike model in the app (Settings > Advanced > Scroll all the way down). Find the full list of affected models here. The S5, A5, and S6 series use newer technology and are completely unaffected by this change.

Q: What exactly will stop working on my bike?

A: Only the Theft Tracking feature will be affected. This is the feature that helps you locate your bike via the 2G network if it's stolen. Remote Connectivity will also be impacted. This means you will lose remote notifications about your bike's battery or alarm.

Q: Will my bike still work?

A: Yes. Your bike will continue to work perfectly for riding. Only the Theft Tracking feature & Remote Connectivity is impacted by the 2G shutdown.

Q: What features will continue to work?

A: All other connected features continue to work normally:

  • Apple Find My (if equipped)
  • Kick Lock
  • VanMoof app and all app functionality
  • All bike riding features

These run on independent networks and are not affected by the 2G shutdown.

Q: When is the deadline?

A: You need to have an active Ride Pro subscription before April 1, 2026, to keep your Theft Tracking feature working.

Q: What happens if I don't subscribe to Ride Pro

A: Your bike's SIM card will expire, and you will permanently lose the Theft Tracking feature. This means you won't be able to track your bike's location via the 2G network if it's stolen. However, all other bike features will continue working normally.

Q: Can I reactivate Theft Tracking later if I change my mind?

A: No. Once the 2G network begins gradual phase out and your SIM expires, the Theft Tracking feature cannot be reactivated.

Q: What is Ride Pro and what does it include?

A: Ride Pro is VanMoof's subscription service that keeps your SIM card active for Theft Tracking and includes additional features and benefits. More info on our Ride Pro page.

Q: How much does Ride Pro cost?

A: The pricing of Ride Pro can be found on our Ride Pro subscription page.

Q: I have Apple Find My on my bike. Will it still work?

A: Yes. It works independently and is not affected by the 2G shutdown.

Q: Do I still need Ride Pro in order to use Theft Tracking if my bike is stolen?

A: Yes. In order to use the Theft Tracking feature, you’ll need a Ride Pro subscription, as it relies on the 2G network.

Q: Why does maintaining the network cost more now?

A: As 2G networks are phased out, maintaining connectivity for remaining users requires specialised infrastructure and comes at a higher cost from network providers. VanMoof has negotiated with our telecommunications provider and makes this available through Ride Pro subscriptions.

Q: Will I receive a reminder before the deadline?

A: Yes, VanMoof is reaching out to all affected riders to ensure they're aware of this change and the April 1, 2026 deadline.

Q: What if I live outside the Netherlands?

A: The 2G shutdown is happening worldwide, though timelines vary by country. Regardless of your location, the April 1, 2026 deadline applies to keep your Theft Tracking active through Ride Pro.
