2G network phase-out: what it means for your VanMoof
Mobile networks worldwide are evolving, and 2G connectivity is being gradually discontinued by network providers. If you own a VanMoof S3, X3, or earlier connected model, this change will affect your bike's Theft Tracking feature.
What's changing?
The Theft Tracking feature on S3, X3, and earlier models relies on the 2G network to locate your bike if it's stolen. As this network is being phased out globally, starting in the Netherlands in March 2026, this specific feature will be impacted.
VanMoof has worked closely with our data provider to develop a solution that allows you to maintain your bike's tracking capability. Maintaining the network for riders comes at an increased cost.
We have successfully developed a solution that allows our S3 and X3 riders and older connected models to keep their connection active if they subscribe to Ride Pro. Without an active subscription before April 1st, 2026, the SIM card in your bike will expire - impacting only theft tracking.
Our commitment to keeping you connected
Since the summer of 2023, following the company's restart, VanMoof has been covering the connectivity costs for all S3 & X3, and earlier models to ensure riders could continue using their connected features. When the 2G phase-out began, we negotiated with our network providers to find a way forward for riders who value staying connected.
Maintaining this specialised connectivity comes at a significantly increased cost, and we want to be transparent about that. For riders who want to keep their Theft Tracking active, we've made this possible through Ride Pro. This approach allows us to continue supporting those who need this feature while ensuring the service remains sustainable. We've structured it this way so you have a choice: subscribe to Ride Pro for full connectivity benefits, or continue enjoying your bike's other features without connectivity.
How to keep your Theft Tracking active
To continue using Theft Tracking after the 2G shutdown, you'll need an active Ride Pro subscription before April 1st, 2026.
With Ride Pro, you'll:
- Keep your bike's SIM card active and maintain Theft Tracking
- Access all additional Ride Pro benefits and features
- Enjoy ease of mind with comprehensive bike protection
Important deadline: If you don't have an active Ride Pro subscription before April 1st 2026, your bike's SIM card will expire, and Theft Tracking will stop working permanently and irreversibly.
What continues to work normally?
The good news: all other connected features on your bike are completely unaffected by this change, including:
- Apple Find My (if applicable, 2021 models and newer)
- Kick Lock
- VanMoof app functionality
- All other app-based features (that don't require Ride Pro)
These features run on independent technologies and will continue working as usual, with or without a Ride Pro subscription.
Which bikes are affected?
Affected models:
- VanMoof S3 & X3
- VanMoof S2 & X2
- VanMoof Electrified S & X
- VanMoof Smart S & X
- VanMoof Smartbike
Unaffected models:

- VanMoof S5 & A5
These models use newer technology and are fully unaffected by this change.
